Background on Human Biospecimens and Research

The continued advancement of new molecular technologies, digital pathology, artificial intelligence, personalized medicine, Immunotherapy, CRISPR technology, and high throughput screening has resulted in an abundance of research questions. These questions increase the demand for well-characterized human biospecimens, research-oriented pathologists, and specialty laboratories to support the research and provide lab testing services.

The Challenges

  • Researchers have a difficult time finding well-characterized biospecimens of the right type, quantity, and quality with the data needed.
  • Pharma and biotech companies often use as many as 50 different suppliers or sites to obtain the biosample numbers needed.  This creates variability in tissue quality, data, and timelines.  In addition, collecting from multiple locations and entities is challenging due to logistics, ethics, and legal contracts.
  • As research advances, so will the questions and the need for complex data sets to better understand the molecular information, which guide patient treatments and outcomes.
  • The changes in healthcare and reimbursement for laboratories, pathologists, and physicians have decreased revenue dramatically. The need for alternative revenue sources has never been so acute.

The Opportunity

  • Each year independent labs and hospitals spend money and resources to dispose of biospecimens after clinical testing has been completed and samples have aged out. These samples could have been used to support meaningful research.
  • Laboratories and hospitals generally lack the resources, bandwidth, and expertise to provide biomaterials and services to industry research customers.
  • The large sample cohorts (1000s of cases) that are needed can rarely be filled by a single laboratory or large hospital system.  A network of sites and partners is needed.
  • Palm Beach BIO was created to meet the needs of research by organizing and partnering with a network of laboratories and pathologists to provide biomaterials and various research services necessary to accelerate the drug and diagnostic development cycle.
